By ancient custom in Florence it is customary to give a florin at birth, baptism or other important occasions; in the Middle Ages, the pure gold coin depicting Santo Giovanni Battista, patron of the city, represented a real treasure, an auspicious amulet for fitter life and even today it is a precious gift and a wish for prosperity: “ A Florin today for a thousand florins tomorrow!”

On one side depicted the Lily, symbol of the city, and on the other StJohn the Baptist, the patron saint of Florence.
